Quit Cigarette Smoking – Do You Know Your Options?
When you quit cigarette smoking you will find yourself looking for help as soon as the cravings hit and it all becomes too hard. This is perfectly normal and understandable but many people simply take whatever option of help is put in their way first often to the detriment of their quit cigarette smoking goals!
To combat this here is a quick list of help available to smokers looking to kick their habit and be happier, healthier (and have a wallet with more cash in it too!)
1. Products
There is a range of cessation treatment products designed to wean smokers of cigarettes and hold off cravings by feeding the nicotine addiction that is a large cause (but not the only one) of the need to smoke again.
You can purchase nicotine patches, nicotine gum (like Barack Obama), nicotine spray and inhalers too. These are all designed to help with nicotine cravings but they will not stop you smoking cigarettes if you have a strong psychological addiction to them which most people have. They can be a useful addition to your attempt to quit though as long as you do not put all your faith in them!
2. Support Groups
There are many support groups and therapy groups available for smokers which can be located through local medical centers and hospitals. One problem with therapy and groups like this though is that everyone else is hooked like you and all you do is talk about smoking which can be a distraction from quitting sometimes! IT can generate more stress than it solves and the quitting rate from these is quit poor. However if you have no support from anyone else in your life this may be the best option because everyone needs personal support going through this rough time.
3. Hypnosis
Many may scoff at the thought of quitting cigarette smoking through hypnosis but more and more people who are open to the idea have found some relief with hypnosis. This is because it does not change the way you think with mind control as many may think but instead it is a tool to slightly reprogram the way you think but only if you want it to. Skeptics should keep away from this but if you believe in the power of the mind and what6 hypnosis can do it has produced decent results. As a note you can also do self hypnosis with many audio courses available on the internet to help you quit smoking cigarettes.
4. Neuro Linguistic Programming
This term has a mixed reaction in the psychological sciences, some discredit it but under various different names extremely successful life coaches like Anthony Robbins have taken the core concept and shaped it to change millions of people’s lives for the better. The basic concept is that through language and certain ways of thinking you can reprogram the way you think. Much like hypnosis it requires an open mind but NLP practitioners have shown it can be a powerful ally to strengthen resolve and change life habits.
5. Lung Detoxification
This is something you rarely hear about but has had many success stories also. The basic premise is that your lungs are filled with tar and gunk from smoking cigarettes for so long and to quit cigarette smoking you must detox your lungs and clean them out. While this is simply a great idea for your health it has the added benefit that it actually puts you off cigarette smoking once it is done because the rapid detox effect leaves the body unused to smoking and makes it quit un-enjoyable.

I am smoking what I hope is my last cigarette, where do I go from here?
I’ve got cinnamon sticks,i plan on drinking alot of water i’ve tried nicorette gum and patches in the past, suckers and lollipops make my lips sticky, is there a good non nicotine gum that doesn’t have aspartame that will not rot my teeth? aspartame rots your mind according to some flight study done by the military where the subjects blacked out at high altitudes that were usually routine for pilots as well as slowed their reaction times
coffee makes me want to smoke so i may have to quit that also
what has helped you quit? I’ve heard some pills have pretty weird side effects, like strangling your spouse in their sleep (seriously)
i heard champx is the best
i would really like to be successful this time and do believe in cold turkey, smoking another cigarette is not an option
anyone have any suggestions? i know its asking alot but help.
Be sure to keep healthy food around because you are going to want to eat alot more and you may end up gaining weight if all you have is junk food. Good luck

Stop buying cigarettes is a good first step. Don’t let yourself do it.
Try buying those floss toothpicks. It gives you something to do with your hands and your mouth while all your friends are smoking plus you’ll have really healthy teeth.
If you absolutely must smoke a cigarette go ahead and let yourself do it – just remind yourself that it’s not total failure and it doesn’t put you back at square 1 necessarily. You can smoke one cigarette in a week and not smoke again the next day. You could even smoke one a day and still be better off than smoking half a pack every day. Think of it as a ‘reduction of harm’ thing where as long as you’re smoking less it’s progress.

I hear ya bro, I’m 24, been smoking for 10 years and can’t quit even though I really want to.
For what it’s worth, I have a plan for the next time I try to quit. I want to get down to taper down to about half a pack a day and then quit cold turkey. They say the first week or so is the hardest, so I want to do it a time when I know nothing too stressful will happen and I can keep busy. My buddies all smoke, so hanging out with them right when I quit I know would make me start again. Also, throw away your ashtrays, cigarettes, lighters etc.
and food, I figure if I have a lot of good food to eat, I can eat when I want to smoke. I’ll gain weight, but I’m slim, so 10 extra pounds wouldn’t be too bad.

chew your gum when you have a craving.and have something to play with in your hand for the psychical withdraw like a pen or anything that would keep your hands busy. Also exercise will help take your mind off of cigarettes, not only that but will help you get in better shape since you do gain some weight when you quit.I suggest to do cold turkey it’s the only healthy way to do it and it’s what I did to quit.I use to smoke around three packs of newport full flavor 100′s daily and now iv’e been smoke free for a year and a half.

smoke stinks
All those things might make it a bit easier but you have to have self control!
Someone very close to me stopped smoking cigarettes when he went to rehab, he didn’t even think about smoking while he was there because he had so many other things on his mind and when he came out after about 2 weeks he just didn’t have the urge to smoke anymore.
I’m not saying you should go to rehab but maybe if you were to stay somewhere where you weren’t allowed to smoke or maybe even give your money to a trusted friend or relative you wouldn’t be so tempted to buy them. And all throughout this time maybe you should try accomplishing a goal or doing something productive that will keep you busy!
GOOD LUCK

hi Treadlong..
congratulations on your decision to quit.. its not always easy, but in the end its doable.. as far as the gums patches and all that stuff, well that’s up to you works for some folks, but didn’t for me..
the one thing that did work for me is participation in a support program.. i found it was the missing ingredient in all the times i had tried to quit.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally, and on line… online voice meetings are as close as your computer..
i smoked for over 40 years, and now have over 5 years nicotine freedom.. however you decide to quit good luck!!!.. there is no wrong way to quit!!
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

Man that is rough, cold turkey. Best would be to gradually slow down from a pack a day, to 10 a day, to 5, to 2, to 1, to 2 a week, to 1 a week, to once a month, to eventually only smoking cigars on special occasion.
Besides locking yourself in a room for two weeks, and doing whatever you need to do to prevent yourself from dieing of boredom. Just try and fill that void with pain or pleasure. The nicotine urges only last from a few seconds or a few minutes, so it is easy to power through them. However, if you dont take your mind off it, they can easily last hours of just craving.
I mean besides just focusing on what you are doing, like work or watching tv. There is not much you can do. Work, focus on work, crave, do a push up drink some water, and in my experience, coffee actually aint that bad when you quit.
Best think though, is when you are craving, dont ignore it. Feel it, understand it, and talk to it. Tell it what you are doing and why. Can’t just ignore it, like when somone got mad at you and yelled at you. If you just not think about it, it sits in your mind and eats you up. However, if you rationalize about it, your mind and body comes to and ease.
But ya, thats just my little two cents, good luck man!
