I really want to quit smoking, does anybody have any advice or can tell me what to expect?
It wasnt hard for me, I’m an alcoholic though, and it’s horribly difficult to stop. I imagine smoking and alcoholism is about the same difficulty level to stop.

Get out of your comfort zone!! I quit 10 years ago by getting on an airplane and taking a weeks vacation. This changes your everyday routine and allows you to reset yourself. Also if everyone you hang with is smoking than why would you quit? Get away from the other smokers in your life for a week and see if you still want that cigarette. It worked great for me and I haven’t had a smoke since I got on the plane. Good luck!! References :
My father is a smoker, for a good 40 years, and he is finally quitting. He is taking this new medication, although a little expensive, and it is working already. It is called CHANTIX(varenicline). You can read all about it at the sourced site. It is working for him as well as a couple of his friends. You take the medication and smoke with it for a week, then you stop smoking all together, or little by little. It has a 44% success rate as opposed to nicotine’s 18%. Good luck, and try to get support from your friends or family as well. I quit smoking 3 yrs ago cold turkey. I tried many things and nothing worked, finally my Dr told me that the first three days is the worst, once you get over that you will be ok…. It worked. I chewed on straws adn alot of gum…. I have to say that i smoked from the time I was 13 Im now 32… Good Luck!! References :
If you want to quit, first you must reach "threshold". An emotional point where you feel deep within you "Enough is enough, I can’t live my life like this any longer!". You may WANT to change, but to be driven to action, you must have this burning desire within you. Think about how your life will be, 5, 10, 15 years from now if you don’t have this area of your life handled. How will you look, how will you feel? If you’ve been able to trigger this mindset, you then need to get a progressive system in place for yourself. Smoking is an additction, which is a mental issue. You need to learn how to re-wire the way you look at and feel about smoking cigarettes. You additionally need as many tips and techniques at your disposal whenever you get a craving. There are many books out there which can teach you how to do this effectively.
Lastly, you need to take action. This is the most important step. It’s one thing to talk about quitting smoking or wanting to quit smoking, it’s another to take that first step in progressing towards that goal. Willpower is overrated, you need to set in place healthier habits and progressively work your way to a smoke free lifestyle.
I tried to quit smoking today, but I’m a sucker I guess, this is like my fifth time trying. I really want to quit but I just go crazy inside when I don’t smoke. This sucks, never smoke.
I quit after many years, have been free for over 2 years now.
First off, what one guy already told you…american spirit.
first thing change to those never smoke anything else.
cut out hundreds o chemicals that your body doesnt need and makes it more addictive and poisonous.
The way I finally quit.: I picked a date, which was my birthday for easy reference, also to give myself the present of healthy lungs. I chose it like 5 months in advance. The rule I gave myself was that I could smoke all I wanted until my birthday, and by that date I would never smoke again. I told everybody that I knew, family, friends, and professionally, that I would quit by that date. Then my pride was entangled with that goal so I could not fail. Sometimes when we state something, like we wiull quit smoking, there just isnt a high enough level of committment. For my personality, this was the magic way. I didnt feel deprived because I smoked all I wanted, and every time I did I announced my quit date. Of all the people I told, only a couple doubted me, but their doubt made my will even stronger.
I also did stuff like worked on reducing the amount I smoked to make it easier to drop it, and not aqllowing myself to smoke indoors, I smoked outside with a special jacket, to keep the smell off my clothes. I learned some other things, deep things during this time, which I will share with you if you are interested and contact me by email.
start off slowly start by smoking 3 a day.. than when your used to it 2.. than 1.. than none! its a slow process ur addiction wont go away in one day! References :
well please dont give up. my mom and dad smokes and i cant stand it. it makes me wanna cry everytime she lites a cig. because then shes on breath closer to dieing. i relly dont want to be a kid with no parents. and if you have kids im sure they feel the same way as i do. even if you dont im sure your friends and family feel that way to. I began college a few years ago. Before that, I used to drink pop/soda. However, in college I drank coffee to keep myself awake. I didn’t want to drink pop when I eat lunch in the cafeteria because I didn’t want to get too much caffeine from coffee+soda. So I quit drinking soda and started drinking water. I no longer have a craving for soda. It got cleared from my system. I probably drink one soda once every few months. References :
first, try switching to "american spirit" cigarettes. it won’t fulfill your cravings like marbolo or camel, because american spirit is natural tobacco and does not contain additives and all that crap. but it’ll help you cope. then slowly, little by little, reduce the amount of american spirit cigarettes, and eventually you can be smoke free. References : that’s how i quit
yes, i’ve been there.
i guess it was easier for me to quit because i’m a minor and it wasnt always easy getting a hold of them. and it wasnt always easy smoking them. for me.. it just got old trying to hide it. but for you, if you cant do it cold turkey.. try some of the gum or the patch. there are a lot of things available to help you out. but boy do i know what you mean.. when you think everything is going well you think about it for 2 seconds and want that quick fix. try to keep busy. tell all your friends not to let you even think about it. and if you do think about it.. then talk about it! tell someone how badly you want one but how you know you can’t. good luck. References :
it’s so hard!! keep trying though, you can do it! i quit for a year, then started back up over the new year… aaarrrgggeee!!! the way i did it the first time was to take a vacation of at least 5 days, get lots of munchies, gum, candy and mints and plant yourself in front of the t.v…. 5 days of overeating is better than a lifetime of smoking!! References :
This is easier than you think, and thats the main thing you need to know.
You were not born with a cigarette, so there for you do not need to die by them eh?
Whenever you want a cigarette, distract yourself, you can drink water, treat yourself with chocolate or…
Take your thumb and index finger of either hand, do you know that flap of skin between them? Use your thumb and index finger to gently press this skin on the other hand between the thumb and index finger.
Press gently or a little more hard (DO NOT BRUISE YOURSELF!!) until you feel the craving pass.
You can count in between too.
This has actually helped my friend who smoked for 20 years quit.
My mom quit cold turkey. You force yourself to never buy them, or you try to find a reason to put it off and you’ll never have any to smoke when you want to.
You can also try gradually getting off of them. Say you currently smoke a pack a day, cut back to half that amount until you are comfortable with that level cut back again until you eventually feel you can stop.
Nicotine patches might also help, and again just gradually cut back.
Those are the 3 best suggestions I can come up with. Whatever you do don’t put it off, start today or else for the rest of your life you’ll be telling yourself you can quit tomorrow. Good Luck! References :
first of all I just want to say: That’s great! you want to quit smoking!
next I think you should go and talk to your pharamcist on how you can quit somking. He/she can suggest methods that you can try to help you quit. Also, from what I’ve lerned in school when you want to smoke first you should try and destract yourself, like go and brush your teeth everytim you want to smoke or try and slove a puzzle. I also learned that if you drink cold water slowly when feel like somking you will lose the urge to smoke. I don’t know how it works but it effect a part of the brain to help you out with not smoking. I hope this helps. but you should seek professional help with that quest of yours it may seem hard at times, but you’re doing it to have better health =) References :
Trying to do it on your own can be pure hell. You can go to your doctor and get medications that will help relax you so you can overcome the cravings. References :

I think I’m more addicted to actually smoking cigarettes than the nicotine itself. I want to quit after I get married this February. Does anyone have any advice? Or know any doctors in NYC who could help me quit?
Make a list of the reasons you want to quit and the benefits. Write them down. Refer to them often. When you have a bad crave, read them.
Put together a "Quit Kit" with things like gum, hard candy, straws (to chew on), paper clips and rubber bands (to keep your hands busy) and whatever else you think may help you in your quit.
Drink lots of water. It helps clean your system.
Be prepared to have rough spots and feel uncomfortable for awhile, you are addicted to a drug and your body will go through withdrawal. But, it will pass as long as you do not smoke!
Find support. It is sooo much easier to quit if you have support. Try visiting www.quitnet.com. This site is amazing. A group of wonderful people support each other in their quits!
Quitting is the best decision you could make! It is so worth it!
Quitting is not easy, but it is very simple. Simply don’t smoke!
You could always trade that addiction for a healthier one, for example, if you get a craving you chew some of that nicotine gum, and over time you could mix in more and more regular gum until finally you just chew regular gum, then you’re only problem is needing gum, and that at least shouldn’t shorten your life and the lives of those around you.
Just don’t try the cold turkey method, because that hardly ever works unless they had just started. References :
if you’re a heavy smoker then don’t stop entirely immediately.
just smoke lesser and lesser each day until you finally get to zero.
key point would be determination as the withdrawal symptoms would be bugging you, so look for someone to control you or smth.
you can try nicotine sweets available in pharmacies to reduce the withdrawal symptoms caused by nicotine. References :
its the nicotine and other stuff that you are addicted to,dont kid yourself.
you do not need expensive doctors or trainers to get you to quit, you just need some good old fashioned WIILPOWER!! References :
Hi! Well i have tried to quit atleast 3 diffrent times since 2001! The longest I quit was for 6 months. I did discover why I start back to smoking. Every time I did start back it would be like 2 weeks before Christmas…. The stress and worrie drives me crazy and I break to the point of having a pack of cigs. I quit with those Hot Jolly Rancher hard candies! I had to buy like 3 big packages a week at first but in about a month I was like only buying 1 pkg. aweek. Well I hope this helps you and Good Luck with the Marriage and smoking…. References :
I started smoking for a very stupid reason. when i was in college some guy was smoking next to me. Stupid me thought i would try one and that would be that. Boy was i wrong. i came home for Christmas and my dad warned me that i would get addicted. I just did not listen. I have smoked on and off for the past 9 years. My doc gave me a new drug called chantix. you keep smoking while you take the first pack of of the drug (i think its 10 days) and than you stop smoking, but keep taking the pills until you are ready to stop. My advice for those who smoke or are thinking about it. DONT even have one cig.. once you do you are hooked and for those who already do smoke. STOP. i know its easier said than done, but you will feel better, you will smell better and most of all..you will live lot longer. References :

Your body will be adjusting to the fact it is no longer inhaling cigarette smoke. It is all perfectly natural and nothing to worry about. Your pains will be gone within a a couple of weeks. The longer you stay smoke free the healthier you become and the easier it is to say No.
I bet you have heard that quitting smoking is the hardest thing you will ever do. Your body will not function properly, you won’t sleep or eat, you will get the shakes etc etc
Trust me when I say you will only feel these symptoms for a small period of time (if at all). When I quit I was waiting for all these things to happen but none of them ever did. The only thing I felt was the occasional wanting of a cigarette. As time goes on this passes and quicker than you think too.
There are no real negative side effects to quitting, only positive ones. The longer you have stayed smoke free the easier the quitting process becomes. You have made the right choice, believe you can quit and you will.

Ya, that is probably from withdrawal symptoms. Are you using any kind of gum or nicotine patches? Those may ease some of the symptoms. Also, if you don’t quit this time, there is that pill that helps people quit…Wellbutrin XL I believe. Well good, luck and don’t stop trying. Smoking is sooooo bad as I’m sure you already know! I No Many people with this problem !
So Don’t feel like your the only one you are doing well on your fifth day !
Usually the first couple of days are the worst but it is totally normal its just part of you wanting a cigarette but you have got to fight !
Don’t Let go because you will have to start again which will lead to more feeling like crap !
Try and pull through maybe try that New Fake cigarette the water condensing one ?
And nicotine patches and the nicotine gum maybe try therapy or relaxing ?
it could help !
yes, that is why it is so hard to quit. keep it up and you will soon have all of thsibehind you and feel 100% better. you may have to do it 1 min at a time then 1 hour then 1 day. but in the end it will be worth it. chew gum. mints keep something in your hand like a pen or pencil, something just to keep your hands busy. Well quitting smoking is very difficult for those who smoke many times a day. But tell him to be brave and don’t use any patches or medicines (I recommend) because they can be dangerous in many cases. But when he will quit smoking by himself, without using any medicines, then he will become confident, it increases confidence in man, it makes you brave.

No . It’s a personal decision. He has to want to quit to seceed.
His best way would be to go cold turkey.
1-wear only shirts with pockets.
2-keep his cigerettes in a shirt pocket while quitting.
3-leave them there while quitting without smoking any of them.
you cannot hide from a bad habit yuou have to look it dead on and overcome it.
Ask him if he had to choose between you and smoking what would he do. References :
he’s the one that smokes and he’s the one that has to want to quit… you can’t do it for him… you can’t fool him into it either… he will only not smoke around you, that’s all. References :
You can’t make anyone do anything that they don’t want to; I wouldn’t even try (it’ll just piss him off–the constant nagging). It’s like alcoholism, they’re not going to quit until they’re ready to quit; when the pain of not quitting gets to be worse than the pain of quitting.
And, the only way to quit for sure is cold turkey. One can use the patch as directed to get over the acute nicotine addiction (and associated shakes and tremors). But then, one must just make up ones mind that "I’m not going to smoke again; not just one, not just cut down, but smoke the last one in the last pack in the last carton", and give away the lighters and ashtrays and anything else that reminds one of smoking in any way; if you get the urge to smoke, the shakes, the cravings, you just say "No", and use will power alone. Smoking quit groups also help a lot, too.
But you can’t make him; no one can, except him. References :
No! He has to do it himself. I quit smoking 9 mo ago after smoking for over 20 yrs, it hasn’t been easy but I had to because I have asthma & it almost killed me. That made me finally stop. Before that just thinking about trying to quit made me want a cigerette, anyone else saying something to me about quiting made me mad even though I knew they only said it because they cared about me. Smoking is a very hard thing to quit, don’t bug your friend about it, let him decide for himself & then just support him. References :

It is normal, just hold out because you will feel so much better when you get past it. It has been a year for me, and even though I still think about smoking, now it is a feeling of pride that I was able to quit! Try to exercise, even if it is just walking it will give you more energy and help you stay committed. I hope you make it!!!

Yes, I would say that it is withdrawal. Just give it a couple more days and your body will slowly adjust. If your worried though, you should see a doctor. References :
First and foremost, Congratulations. Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do for your health, Period. You are likely to feel bad for a few more days while your body gets used to the change. It depends on how much you smoked before as to how bad the Side Effects will be. It sounds like you are using a lot of nicotine alternatives and this could actually be more than you were getting in the first place. If for some reason you don’t think these methods are working or the problems get worse and persist you can talk to your doctor about Chantix. It has the highest smoking cessation rate of any other product. Good luck to you! References :

Not really, cigars … Not really, cigars are really just smoked for the taste. Kind of pointless, but if you can afford them then go for it. I started with cigars
To people trying to … To people trying to quit smoking, may I recommend over-the-counter sleeping pills (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) as a substitute? Has a similiar relaxing effect, lasts longer, is cheaper and generally more fun than smoking. I do both
obviously if you … obviously if you already started smoking its hard but its all in your mind. people are so scared of terrorists of murderrers and all that while they cant fight their own will to save their OWN life from a stupid little thing! thats absurd isnt it?
thats a bit hasrh i … thats a bit hasrh i started smoking when i was 13 and have not given up for 3 weeks and have no plans of going back everyone makes mistakes and its freedom of choice if he wants to smoke let him. he knows is the wrong choice and he is punishing himself
It wasnt hard for me, I’m an alcoholic though, and it’s horribly difficult to stop. I imagine smoking and alcoholism is about the same difficulty level to stop.
