Quit Smoking for Your Health and Success

If you have grown up in the last 30 years, you have been taught that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. We’ve learned how it is directly tied in to lung cancer and emphysema. We’ve also learned some other common side effects. Bad breath, smelly clothes, and the fact that now public smoking is banned all over the place.

So why do young teens and adults continue to pick up the habit and keep smoking? Well, for one, it is still one of the naughty things that a kid can sneak behind their parents backs. And kids can sometimes find a group of fellow smokers at their school or part-time jobs and the cigarette provides a false bond between these people.

But what about the cost of smoking? In New York, for example, a pack of cigarettes will set you back around $ 7. Smoke a pack a day and that adds up to $ 200 a month. I could pay my utility bill with that kind of money. Add that up over the course of a year and you would have about $ 2400. Not a bad little nest egg every year.

And the poor health. Smokers face greater health costs as they grow older. From nagging coughs and higher rates of respiratory infections to the dreaded cancers. This alone should be enough to make people want to quit. But often, they just keep right on smoking. The mental habit of it is even more powerful than the physical addiction. But wouldn’t the promise of death outweigh even the mental addiction?

To truly quit, you would have to change the way that you see cigarettes. See them as a source of cancer and poverty. That’s what they really are. See them as something that alienates you from non-smokers. Or as something that forces you to go outside and into the cold winter air just to get a quick fix. See them as the kind of legal drug that they are.

Smoking will cost you many times more what the benefits are. And you never know just how much of a cost it could ultimately be. At $ 7 a pack and a pack a day, 10 years of smoking would cost you around $ 25,000. That’s a lot of money to spend just to slowly kill yourself.

I usually did cold turkey. I was never addicted, it was more of a habit. When I was tempted to smoke I would keep reminding myself that I don’t want to start again.

Actualy cold turkey worked for both my ex’s mum, dad, brother and my husband! It just depends on your will power, the strength you have from the reason behind quitting and a lot of support. It’s hard but well worth it, especially for your age, you got alot of millage yet, so hang in there and good luck, I have every confidence you can do it.

I have been successful. I actually started smoking when i visited England for 2 months, I just partied and drank, and smoke, and walla! i became a smoker for a year and a half. the way i stopped, is that i actually started smoking "American spirit." those don’t have the synthetic chemicals that the other ones have, so they are "less" addictive. thought they are still not healthy, but do less damage. when i adjusted to those, i started to chew tobacco, and then i slowly stopped chewing tobacco, and started chewing gum, and the i was finally able to break a certain habit. It took a wile thought, about almost a year to stop. Everybody is different, it helped me, but i can;’t guarantee that it will help you, but try it out! good luck!

You can do the patches, gum, and every thing out there to help you quit. The only way you can do it is really have the will to quit, then quit cold turkey. I did that once and succeeded, but 6 months later i started again. You said that cold turkey never works, that’s because you don’t have the will, and like me enjoy smoking. You don’t say how many cigarettes you smoke a day, and I am not encouraging you to smoke, if you continue at least take control of them, don’t let them control you. I can go for hours and never smoke one, but come lunch or dinner, I smoke a couple then. If I am worried about something, smoking relaxes me and calms me down. The Bible says, and this is what they say to you, you are not suppose to do anything that will hurt the temple of God, and that’s you. But it also says do everything in moderation which simply means don’t over indulge. If you eat to much, you’re going to get fat. If you drink to much it will destroy your liver, if you eat a lot of sugary products, you’ll eventually end up a diabetic, and so on. So if you continue to smoke, don’t over indulge in them. The choice is yours and which ever way you go, I wish you the very best and good luck. I personally think that you don’t really want to quit and somebody is edging you on to quit. No offense.

Very much agree with the post above me – you just have to really want to quit and then it is possible. I stopped 6 months ago, the desire to be a non smoker is as strong as ever so I think I’ll stay off them. I used patches at first and also changed quite a lot of my routines. I smoked for over 20 years so it was a big achievement for me to stop.
If it helps I feel and look 100% better and I’m loving having more money!
